Who are we?

Frontier College was established in 1899

Frontier College Literacy at U of T St. George is a non-profit, volunteer-run student organization at the University of Toronto.  Our program fosters the development of skills in basic literacy, numeracy, and English as a Second Language for elementary, secondary and adult learners.  Millions of voices are silenced by a society with high literacy demands.  Literacy touches every aspect of our daily lives closing out those who lack effective literacy skills.  Everyday tasks such as reading a book to a child, filling out a work order, or reading aspirin instructions are some of the challenges encountered by people who are functionally illiterate.

Programs like Frontier College Literacy at U of T ensure that non-readers have access to literacy education that will meet immediate and long-term needs.  The ability to read and write helps to create new opportunities by providing the skills that increase social, political, and economic participation.  There is a great need for volunteer tutors within the city of Toronto.  The time that is given can be enriching for both the student and the tutor.  Please take a look around our site and see how you can help!

Our Mission

We are a team of dedicated student and community volunteers committed to building literacy skills in under-served communities. Our organization believes in the shared nature of education: in giving knowledge we also receive it.

You don’t need to be an expert in any subject to be a tutor. You just need to be willing to help.

Volunteers are recruited, trained, and supported by Frontier College using the Student-Centered Individualized Learning (SCIL) method, which emphasizes the learners’ active involvement in the decisions which affect their lives. Learners are encouraged to set goals for themselves, based on their needs, interests, and experiences. Tutors facilitate the learning process and build an equal partnership with the learner.
